Welcome to SMBI

We invite you see what God has in store for you as you undertake a life changing journey through the Bible as a student with SMBI. Enrollment is open to anyone who has a desire to attain a Bible college education or may not be able to afford or attend a traditional school.

SMBI is not a place for someone to send money to buy a diploma. It is a serious Bible Institute that is designed to nurture every one of our students to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ (John 8:31) and to take what they have learned and teach others also (2 Timothy 2:2). This being said, SMBI does not exist to make money. We exist to teach the Word of God without charge, being careful not to abuse our power in the gospel so that we may be all things to all men (1 Corinthians 9:18-23). We do this by relying on the donations and love offerings of our church, our students, and others who love the Lord to provide for the needs of SMBI.

It is expected that SMBI may not be for everyone. However, this will not stop us from seeking ways to meet the needs of as many students as possible. For this reason we are constantly seeking ways to improve our courses, develop new courses, and expand our methods of delivering them to our students no matter how and where they live.

There is no doubt that according to the Bible we are living in exciting times. These times exhibit all the signs that God said would occur just before certain end times prophesies would be fulfilled. For this reason it is imperative that we redouble our efforts to help anyone that seeks a relationship with Jesus Christ and train them to be His disciple (student) so that they can fulfill His plan for their life. May God bless each and every one of you that are considering enrolling or being a part of SMBI.

God Speed,
Dr. Mike

Recognition and Accreditation

SMBI is an independent fundamental Bible institute that is part of the outreach of Selah Mountain Baptist Church. We are not part of any organized denomination or association. For this reason, when it comes to recognition and accreditation, an understanding of the same from a Biblical perspective must be gained. We strive to see the world, our purpose, and our mission through the lens of a Biblical world view. This means we are firm believers in letting the Bible explain itself, so as to learn from the Bible the fundamentals of what it really teaches, not what some church leader or cultural icon privately interprets it to teach. We accomplish this by preaching and teaching from all parts of the Bible (KJV) with a focus on helping everyone to become Biblically literate. In other words, we preach and teach it all and let God sort it out.

This being said, SMBI is an operational outreach of Selah Mountain Baptist Church, which meets all the requirements of a recognized church set forth by the United States of America, the State of New Mexico, and the Internal Revenue Service. For more details on financial perspectives as related to donations or expenses, please contact our office and a qualified tax professional.

Finally, when it comes to accreditation, SMBI is not accredited with any outside accreditation agency. There are several reasons for this, all of which we look to the Scriptures for our basis in practice as follows:

  • Government accreditation: SMBI does not seek government accreditation for several reasons. First, the government does not have any Biblical authority to accredit the instruction of God's Word. Second, SMBI does not accept any funding from student loans or any other government funded grants. Finally, SMBI does not seek government approval to share the gospel and train others for the work of the ministry (Mark 12:17).

  • Private accreditation: SMBI does not seek private accreditation for several reasons. First, no matter how Biblically minded an outside organization is, the local church is tasked with overseeing its education and ministry activities (Ephesians 4:11-16). Second, many outside accreditation organizations are nothing more than accreditation mills, which do not seek God's will in Biblical education, but instead, offer accreditation for the purpose of making money. Such organizations, many of which are popular in Christian circles, are widely recognized as being accreditation mills and in many cases are facing legal challenges to their business practices (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22).

  • Professional accreditation: SMBI does not seek any professional accreditation at this time. This is because SMBI does not teach any programs that would fall under such professional accreditation organizations. An example would be a nursing program approved by the National League of Nursing. However, if there were ever a decision to offer a professional program, all necessary steps to attain professional accreditation for the coursework required would be sought as long as it had no detrimental effect or contradicted Scriptural teaching (Philippians 2:14-15).

  • Biblical accreditation: SMBI seeks Biblical accreditation for several reasons. First, God's Word tells us that it is the church, or born again believers together that must give an account or agree on what is right and proper (Matthew 18:15-20). Likewise, we are told that on the testimony of two or three witnesses, every matter must be established (Deuteronomy 19:15-21). Finally, SMBI is accepting of examination by any competent witnesses to confirm that this ministry is of faith in Christ and seeks to prove our own selves by our testimony (Matthew 5:33-37; 2 Corinthians 13:1-10; James 5:12).

We understand that some may seek accreditation because they want to transfer course work to another institution. For this reason SMBI makes every effort to assure that all coursework meets commonly accepted educational standards of practice as it pertains to class hours, semester guidelines, testing, resources, and any other expectations of a properly run educational institution.

This being said, we cannot guarantee that any SMBI coursework completed would be eligible for transfer to another institution. However, our experience has shown that many Christian institutions of higher learning are willing to work with local church Bible institutes to consider acceptance of certain coursework. In any case, SMBI is willing to communicate with any individual or institution seeking information about our curriculum in consideration of transferring credit.

Finally, SMBI reserves the right to approve any coursework that the student desires to transfer into SMBI for credit toward our program requirements. The amount of credits accepted will be determined on a case by case basis taking into consideration student specific factors and the program in which the student is enrolled.

Educational History

SMBI was officially founded on January 3, 2012 with a handful of students attending classes on Tuesday evenings. Prior to that time all classes were more informal in nature meeting at different times during the week. Within a year, it became apparent that there is high interest in Bible college level instruction, but a more flexible program to meet the needs of the students had to be created.

With feedback from many interested parties, work began on reformatting and updating a number of courses that had been taught over a period of thirteen years by Dr. Williams. The courses needed reformatting and updating so that they could be delivered over the internet and through other distance learning methods. Likewise, formal programs were developed using the updated coursework.

Today, that effort continues as the staff and volunteers at SMBI are working fervently to convert prior courses and to develop new courses and programs needed to help prepare brothers and sisters in Christ to take on the smallest to the highest levels of ministry. It is with the love of Christ and our neighbor in mind that we continue the work so that we can multiply the workers for His service.

The response from all over the world has been overwhelming, so we covet earnestly your prayers and support as we build this ministry outreach from the ground up for His glory.
